FAI Passes Resolution Calling for European Football Ban on Israeli Teams

Ireland's football governing body has voted in favor to submit a formal motion to Uefa, demanding the exclusion of Israeli football from all European club and international tournaments.

Grounds for the Proposed Ban

This motion, which was proposed by Irish side Bohemians, highlighted alleged breaches by the Israel Football Association of two key Uefa statutes.

  • Inability to apply and uphold an proper policy against racism.
  • Organisation of football teams in disputed territories lacking the consent of the Palestinian Football Association.

Ballot Results and Future Actions

According to an announcement from the Irish FA, the resolution was backed by 74 votes, with seven opposed and 2 abstentions.

They intends to formally submit this motion to the UEFA's decision-making body, seeking the immediate suspension of the IFA from European tournaments.

In an extraordinary general meeting of the Football Association of Ireland, an standard motion was posed to delegates. It was approved by a majority.

Earlier Uefa Considerations

Uefa had previously paused intentions to exclude Israeli football at the close of last month, following the revealing of Donald Trump's proposed peace plan for the area.

While they never officially confirmed considering an special session on the matter, preparations were believed to be well developed.

Global Backdrop

The FAI resolution comes after comparable demands in last autumn from the leaders of both Turkey and Norway's governing bodies for banning Israel from international competition.

These appeals were made after UN specialists asked world and European football bodies to ban the Israeli FA, referencing a UN investigation that claimed Israel of acts of genocide during the Gaza conflict.

The Israeli government has rejected these claims and described the report as scandalous.

Possible Consequences

If Uefa decide to ban Israel, it would likely strain relations with the United States government – joint hosts for the upcoming World Cup – which is firmly against such an measure.

Even though Uefa has the power to exclude Israeli teams from European competitions, it might not be able to prevent them from taking part in qualification for the World Cup, which falls under world football's governing body.
