A trio of officers were killed and more than a dozen additional individuals got wounded in an apparently intentional gas explosion at a farmhouse in northern Italy.

The detonation was triggered as police and firefighters approached the property near Verona to execute an court-ordered eviction for a brother and sister trio in their late 50s and mid-60s.

All three deceased individuals served in the Carabinieri military police.

The blast could be audible approximately 5 kilometers away and footage from the location showed the building turned into a mass of wreckage.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” commented the Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who noted that efforts had been made to remove the three family members in the earlier times.

Financial Context

The president of the Veneto region, President Zaia, said the property was under an removal notice due to debts accrued by the three owners.

Negotiators had been dispatched to speak to the brothers and sister who had secured themselves into the property. When the officers reached the location shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials think one of the siblings triggered the detonation.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” local police chief the police commander informed news outlets.

“A gas cylinder had been ignited, and the explosion immediately struck our personnel,” he added.

Petrol bombs were also located at the residence, the Interior Minister stated.

Impact Assessment

Injured individuals by the incident included eleven more officers of the police force as well as three members of Italy's state police and a fire services member.

According to the local prosecutor, the property was in a poor condition and had lacked electrical service.

He believed the explosion had taken place on a floor above the entrance and told reporters it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Just prior to the blast, he mentioned personnel had “noticed a hissing sound, presumably the gas cylinders being opened”.

Local Response

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” local residents stated to Italian media, noting that the three had earlier warned to “blow themselves up” rather than be evicted.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”
